Foreign Investor Investment in India: Top Sectors Attracting FPI Money

Foreign investors are returning to selected Indian sectors. But does this mean the stock market is ready for a strong recovery?

Foreign investor investment in India is becoming more selective. The latest Q2 FY27 data shows growing interest in healthcare, consumer services and IT, while several other sectors continue to face selling pressure.
Foreign investors are showing greater interest in healthcare, consumer services, consumer durables and IT. Meanwhile, telecom, power, automobiles and oil & gas continue to face selling pressure.
For retail investors, understanding these money flows can help identify sectors worth researching over the next 3–12 months.
Foreign Investors Return, but Caution Remains
After four consecutive quarters of selling, foreign investors became net buyers of Indian equities in Q2 FY27.
₹14,000 Cr: Approximate net foreign investment in Q2 FY27.
₹1.4 lakh Cr: Approximate foreign selling in Q1 FY27.
15 sectors: Recorded FPI buying in Q2, compared with just 6 in Q1.
This is an encouraging change. However, foreign investors resumed selling in September, showing that their confidence remains weak.
The key point: Foreign investors are not buying every sector. They are choosing businesses with better growth prospects.
1. Foreign Investor Investment in India: Top Sectors Attracting FPI Money
The following five sectors attracted significant foreign investment during Q2 FY27.
Sector | FPI Net Investment |
Consumer Services | 🟢 +₹20,950 Cr |
Healthcare | 🟢 +₹15,800 Cr |
Consumer Durables | 🟢 +₹9,300 Cr |
Information Technology | 🟢 +₹6,500 Cr |
Metals & Mining | 🟢 +₹3,700 Cr |
Healthcare: Strong Growth Prospects
Hospitals and diagnostic companies are attracting foreign investment.
Hospital revenues are expected to grow around 13–15% in FY27, while organised diagnostics businesses could grow 12–14%.
Rising healthcare demand, new hospital beds and preventive health check-ups are supporting this growth.
Investment view: Research hospital and diagnostic companies with strong revenue growth, improving margins and reasonable valuations.
Consumer Services: Retail and Hotels Attract Investors
Consumer services received the highest foreign investment.
Rising demand for travel, hotels, shopping and other consumer services is supporting business growth.
Premium hotel demand is expected to grow 8–9% annually through FY28. Retail sales growth also improved to 10% in August 2026.
Investment view: Selected hotel chains and organised retailers could offer opportunities, provided earnings growth supports their valuations.
Consumer Durables: Organised Brands Gain Market Share
Foreign investors invested around ₹9,300 Cr in consumer durables.
Jewellery, appliances, watches and home products are among the businesses attracting interest.
Organised jewellery companies such as Titan and Kalyan Jewellers may benefit from expansion and the shift towards branded jewellery.
However, strong industry growth does not automatically mean attractive stock returns. The buying price remains important.
IT: Foreign Interest Returns After Corrections
IT companies attracted around ₹6,500 Cr after facing selling pressure in the previous quarter.
AI adoption, cloud services, data management and software modernisation could support future business demand.
However, investors should watch deal wins, client spending, profit margins and management guidance before expecting a sustained recovery.
2. Where Are Foreign Investors Selling?
Several sectors continue to face foreign selling.
Sector | FPI Net Selling |
Telecom | 🔴 −₹14,100 Cr |
Oil & Gas | 🔴 −₹8,900 Cr |
Automobiles | 🔴 −₹7,700 Cr |
Power | 🔴 −₹6,600 Cr |
FMCG | 🔴 −₹5,500 Cr |
Telecom: Heavy 5G investment, pricing uncertainty and regulatory obligations remain concerns.
Power: Long-term demand may remain strong, but expensive valuations could limit near-term returns.
Oil & Gas: Crude oil price movements create uncertainty in earnings.
Automobiles and FMCG: Foreign investors remain net sellers, even though some demand indicators have improved.
Interestingly, selling in financial services fell sharply from approximately ₹50,600 Cr in Q1 to ₹3,350 Cr in Q2.
This could be an early sign of improving foreign interest, but sustained buying is still needed.
3. What Should Retail Investors Do Now?
For investors with a 3–12 month holding period, I would divide the market into three groups.
🟢 Sectors worth researching
Healthcare, hospitals, diagnostics, organised retail, hotels and selected IT companies.
These sectors have encouraging business prospects and have attracted foreign investment.
🟠 Selective opportunities
Banks, automobiles and FMCG.
Foreign selling has continued, but some businesses may become attractive if earnings improve and valuations are reasonable.
🔴 Areas requiring caution
Expensive power, capital goods and telecom stocks.
Some companies may deliver strong long-term growth, but their current prices could already reflect much of that potential.
Four Things Investors Should Monitor
Quarterly earnings: Are revenue and profits growing?
Profit margins: Are companies controlling expenses?
Valuations: Is the stock available at a sensible price?
FPI flows: Is foreign buying continuing or reversing?
Foreign investment is only one useful indicator. It should never be the sole reason to buy a stock.
Final Takeaway
Foreign investors are becoming more selective in India.
Healthcare, consumption and IT have attracted buying, while several capital-intensive sectors continue to face pressure.
However, one positive quarter does not confirm a lasting market recovery.
My investment approach remains simple: Focus on companies with strong business quality, improving earnings and reasonable valuations.
For the next 3–12 months, stock selection may matter more than simply predicting where the overall market will move.
